Keyboard returns wrong characters

Got a wierd problem. The keyboard on my Dell 700m produces the wrong characters. Like when I press the semi-colon (;) key it returns a dash (-) as if the Fn key is being held down. When I hold the Fn key down and press the same key, which should result in the dash (-), it returns a colon (:). When I hold the Shift key and press the semi-colon key, it returns the semi-colon instead of the colon. It seems like those keys which have the third Fn-key characters are backwards. Is it just that the keyboard is toast?

one of 3 things seems likely:
1) you have a key on your motherboard that is stuck. tap the heck out of your Fn key, as well as all your Ctrl, Alt, and Shift keys.
2) your computer (operating system) has switched keyboard modes from standard western world american english setting to some other style. See if you can use your mouse to checkout keyboard settings in the control panel.
3) your keyboard is toast. hit dell/ebay for a replacement keyboard (the cheapest part of a laptop).
