Lately my keyboard has been messing up when I type certain letters (T for example). I'll type T and this will come up: tt or ttt. Is my keyboard crapping out? Is there something I can do to fix this irritating problem? I'm using a Dell laptop.

Is it possible that the keyboard is dirty so that the letters get stuck down for a moment ???
Then you should carefully remove the letters you have problems with and carefully clean the mechanic below. If that doesn't help check the bios for your keyboard settings.
In my award bios (my old P2B slot1 board) they are called "Typematic Rate Setting", "Typematic Rate (Chars/Sec)" and "Typematic Delay (Msec)".
Try to raise the Typematic Delay or lower the Typematic Rate.I've never done that before but hopefully that will help!

Pray that it's the keyboard that is causing the problem. The only other alternative is the motherboard.

If you can't afford a new keyboard try the local Goodwill store. They have them for as little as $3. If it doesn't work take it apart and learn what makes it tick.

Which Dell laptop? The keys on my 4 year old Inspiron 7000 are attached with a nearly undecipherable plastic linkage and are difficult to reassemble. I think a cleaning will take care of the problem. Carefully remove the offending key and if it works ok you can clean everything and reassemble it.

I have a Dell 3700. Cleaned it a little and the problem seems to persist. Is there a way I can reinnstall the keyboard and maybe that would help? Any other suggestions? Thanks to everyone who responded, by the way.

I also have a Dell Laptop and I recently started experiencing very similar problems - in the middle of a word it will switch from lower case to upper case and vice versa. In addition, I have to power on/off several times before my monitor will come on. I was also told to try plugging in another keyboard to see if it's a keyboard problem or motherboard problem. If that fails I was told it was probably my motherboard failing...UGH!

I had the same problem with my 2.5 year old inspiron 8000. Every time I pressed the space bar the thing either didn't type a space or it typed 2 or three spaces. That was just so annoying. The left shift was a hit and miss thing too.
Problem: it's very hard to clean the keyboard properly, cos it can't be opened and then you can only reach the outside keys and from there it isn't possible clean them properly. Lifting off the keys can cause mechanical damage that is very difficult sort out.
Solution:
I went to the Dell website and found out the recommended way to remove the keyboard. Then I soaked the keyboard in hydrogen peroxide for 1 hour. If you didn't know H2O2 is a very strong oxidant and all organic material is dissolved in its presence. Great for cleaning electric toothbrushes etc.. Anyway, I agitated the keyboard in the 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide for 1 hour and then rinsed it with a strong jet from the shower hose.Another 1.5 hours in front of an ordinary fan and fan heater to dry out and thorougly drive out all moisture. I still think this is a short time to dry but the suspense was killing me.
Keyboard back in and voila! Works as good as it did the first day I got it.
I'm so proud of myself!
