Keyboard and mouse not working after XP boots

Specs: Windows XP, Intel P4 3GHz / 1GB
I have a tricky computer to fix:
Keyboard & mouse not working after windows XP loads.
Windows boots up OK but no way of changing anything (of course)
Keyboard works in bios.
CAPS lock and NUMLOCK lights don't change with keypress after Windows loaded.
Tried other PS2 and USB keyboards and mice. No go.
Tried Windows repair from XP Home disk but on step for install XP, hard drive not found, and therefore can't continue.
Install hardware wizard pops up with either HID compliant device found or SIS 180 RAID Controller but cannot click next nor Enter to continue.
If there was a way to VNC this machine I may be able to look at device manager, re-install drivers etc.

Can anyone help with a PC that doesn't want to be controlled, it's so anti 1984!

Your install disk probably does not work since you probably have a SATA drive and the install disk lacks the SATA drivers (can be inserted with a floppy disk at the correct point when it asks you if you have any drivers you need to add, or with a customized install disk that has the drivers slipstreamed into it).
I believe F8 at start up should give you an option of booting to 'Last Known Good Configuration' and this may help you.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
