This computer keeps restarting as it loads windows. It does it also in safe mode.
I don't think it is an over heating issue as the CPU fan is working. I tried reseating the CPU with no luck.

What should I do next?

Just because the CPU fan is working doesn't mean it is not reheating. I would check the temperatures in the BIOS before you conclude that it is not reheating. When you resetaed the cpu, did you remove the old thermal paste/grease and out a small amount of new thermal paste/grease ?

No, it's not your only option. In fact, it's not even a good option if you in fact have a hardware problem and not a software problem.

I cannot find where it has the CPU heat in the bios. The COP control is set to turn the machine off at 85 degrees if that helps

Look for a menu option like PC Health. You should also run a check on the RAM using a program like memtest.

Thanks.

The System temperature is 30degrees C. The CPU is at 47degrees C. Not high at all.

The memory test would have to be run form the OS wouldn't it.

No, you can download memtest from
http://www.memtest86.com/download.html
Then you can burn it to a CD and run it when you reboot.

You should really run memetest for at least a few hours. In any event, if it is a software issue, you could try a repair install using the XP CD-then your programs will remain intact and you would just have to download the Windows updates again.

OK. It still did it with new RAM so it must not be a memory issue. But I will have a go at the repair then.

Thanks for all the help.

Did it reboot during Memtest or while you were in PC Health?

Drop the ram to 512 or so and see if that makes a difference.

No it didn't reboot during memtest or while it was in the bios.

I also tried dropping it to 512mb or RAM but no luck there either.

Try removing all PCI and USB devices and boot up again. See if it still restarts.

If you have an XP CD, put it in the CD drive and restart the computer. Push a key when it says "Press any key to boot from CD..." It will load some drivers. When it says "Welcome to Setup,", press 1 to run the Recovery Console. It will ask you to login, and may ask you what keyboard locale you want. Once you're logged in, type "chkdsk C: /f" without quotes and press enter. When it's done, it will give a summary. See if it detected any bad sectors, and if it found any problems.

it says the parameter is not valid when i try to run the check disk.
Nothing comes up about logging in or the keyboard either.

Yes, that is what I typed.
Also when you get to the welcome screen you press R instead of 1 to get into the recovery console.
Just wondering if that is what is meant to happpen in windows xp home.

LOL yeah I meant R, sorry. I don't know why I put 1 there.

If you tried running chkdsk once, try running it again.

Did you try the repair install yet?

When exactly does it reboot? After it has been up for a moment, during the boot up process?

I had this problem once turned out the PSU was failing.

Practice makes perfect but only if you practice perfectly!
