I had an Epson printer a number of years ago and once it had a problem related to the print cartridges that sounds similar to yours. Take out the print cartridges and unplug the machine, then clean off any electrical contacts on the print cartridges and the corresponding contacts within the printer using a quality rubbing alcohol and Q-Tips (being careful not to leave behind any lint from them). I had found that ink must have leaked from an old ink cartridge onto the printers contacts which then also gets on the new ink cartridge as well. Then let everything dry and reassemble. When ink gets on these contacts, the printer cannot read the ink level and other information as feedback from them, cleaning these contacts should allow them to work correctly again.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
