Hey all, I have a client's machine that has at least one seriously grave issue: I cannot get any video from this board. it has a K8NGM2 board. I also do not get any sound. no beeps - even when I take out both rammies! It's pretty weird that it never posts.
the user uses the digital out for video as there are both analog and digital outs on the m/b. I tried either video out and even put in a PCI vid card, all to no avail.
how on earth do I troubleshoot a machine when I can't even get any audio or video response?
it kinda shames me as I do this as my job, but am sure stumped by this one. and NO, I do NOT have another m/b to just throw in there and see if that is the problem.
Thanks for any feedback,
Chuck

Mobo sounds bad or something not hooked up right, you WILL NEED another motherboard for testing purposes. This is not avoidable.
Core 2 Duo 1.86

I gather the board has integrated graphics and neither the integrated or the add in card will display video? I assume you are sure the PCI card is good and the monitor also? Try known good compatible RAM, 1 stick. If no go, look at the PSU next.

you say no beeps, does this board actually have a 'beeper' on it, not all do, on some you need a speaker connected. I was suprised when i found this out recently when having problems with a ASROCK socket 462 board. I thought all modern boards had a beeper on the motherboard before that.

Note that you should get error beeps with all drives disconnected, all cards pulled including the RAM sticks. All you need to get beeps is a good power supply, good motherboard/CPU and a speaker connected.

actually it appears there are possibly TWO of those little tiny round black (piezo-electric - is that the right term?) speakers, one onboard that is NOT shown on the m/b layout in the manual I found online (no manual from client for this board) and one speaker that is obviously a speaker with the standard single black and single red wire going to it.
the location for the speaker pins on the m/b ARE shown in the manual for this board from MSI.
HEY, I GOT POSTING ON THE MONITOR ONCE. COUNT'EM....ONCE! of the dozens of boot attempts, I got posting One time so far. nothing hooked up that doesn't need to be.
Thanks,
Chuck :)

waiting for the RMA for this board. it seems MSI is aware of a lack of video from this board at least, so I am exchanging it out with them while it is still under warranty. they have a three year warranty where the first two years are free parts & labor, then the third costs $35 for the exchange.
I am done trying to test this board. heck with it.
they said it will be 10-14 business days until I see the replacement once they get this one from me. my client is plenty willing to wait.
Chuck
