I have decided that it's finally time to invest in a dvd writer, and am just looking for some recommendations and advice.

Here are a few I have been looking at:

Pioneer DVR-109D SE

NEC ND-3540AB

LG GSA4163

Samsung 16X Dual Layer DVDRW

They all pretty much have similar specs, but if anyone has one of these, just let me know if it's behaving itself!

Cheers

although i dont have any of these models, I would highly recommend the HP Lightscribe DVD burner. It has the Lightscribe feature which allows you to "burn" or etch images, letters, cd covers, etc. on your burnt CDs. So basically no more of those hard-to-get-perfect cd label kits, no more hassle, etc. IF you have the extra buck..

With all due respect TheWaNGeR, I don't see the benefit in the Lightscribe technology. For the cost of a $100 Epson printer you can buy Printable DVD discs for a lot less than the Lightscribe discs and they will look so much better.

I would stick to burners based upon thier functionality and reliability. In that reguard the Plextor and NEC drives are top rated.

Ocassionally I read a question from a psoter I've heard of before. Where've you been?

I bought the LG GSA4163 a couple of months ago. Then I bought a magazine which compared DVD burners. It got the editors choice! Although I've yet to try burning a DVD on it, it seems quiet and reliable (I have burned CDs).

I'm using the DVR-109 and so far so good. It burns DVDs and CDs with no problems. Comes bundled with Nero 6. Also there's a promise that when the dual layer format is finalised, you can download the firmware for it. Mine came with firmware 1.13 and I downloaded 1.40. Installed with no problems.

I went through a Sony and an HP, and finally found one that works great for everything I need ( specifically, Ghosting my machines.) It's an inexpensive ( about $150 ) Lite-On USB external dual-layer DVD-RW/CD-RW. Backs up my data onto 8X DVD-R's and works great with DVD Shrink.
