It's an old machine...what would you like us to say about it? It'll work & as long as your friend doesn't expect to do anything too heavy with it, it'll be fine. I'd recommend Win98SE instead WinXP.

Asus A7N8X-X

768MB PC3200
Asus A9550 128MB/128-bit

WinME/WinXP Pro

It'll work just fine with 98se...some comments:

"I Making A OLD AT System"
It's an ATX system.

"56K MODEM PCI (Disabled)"
Why disable it...use it to fax stuff.

"Windows XP Home Edition SP2"
98se or dual boot 98se and Win2000.

"Office 2003 PRO"
Office 97Pro or Office 2000Pro

Ditch Norton in favor of the free AVG, add either Kerio 2.1.5 or ZoneAlarm for the firewall, and use Spybot, AdAware, SpywareBlaster for your security.

Friends have similar machines with half the memory and crappier video cards that run just fine on 98se. My folding rig is 98se/W2KPro dual boot, PIII667/256Mb PC133 stuffed in an old emachines case and runs office2000pro just fine.

Finally, why the Permedia video card? Aren't most of those for CAD running under NT4.0?

Go with Windows 2000, you'll be glad you did.

XP should run ok, a little slow but it will go.
I've had xp run on much worse and it ran fine, a pentium 1 233 with 96MB ram, lol. If you install it and turn off all the fancy eye candy and unneeded services, it should run great. I recommend windows 2000 or windows ME for that machine for best performance.
