Probably the Inverter that has blown. This is a device that converts DC to AC to power the CCFT (Cold Cathode Florescent Tube) that provides the light for the display.

It is a relatively simple thing to fix by an engineer. It can even be fixed by the user if you have any experience on working on computers. If not an I would contact Dell.

BTW: It is an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) Not an LED (Light Emitting Diode). The only LED displays you will see are the huge twenty foot high ones you see at sports events.

Hey StuartS

Just to let you know. LED TV systems have been available for several months. They're no longer the sole province of the big outdoor screen. If the advertising can be believed they have better Hi Def than an LCD or Plasma and run on a lot less power

By the way, I agree the OP has either a blown inverter or the backlight has failed. In any case it's a job for an experienced tinkerer or a tech.
