Is my soundcard spoilt?

Specs: Windows XP
Hi everyone,

Yesterday, my sound was perfectly fine until i was playing a game then i realised it's weird. I can hear the background music perfectly fine but the sound of my character, effects are very soft and there's a weird sound. I went to the settings because i knew there were 2. One for background music and another for game sound. I set the game sound louder but still it doesn't work. I then thought it's a problem of my game. Afterwards, i went and on my songs but i was shocked to find out that the same problem happens. I can hear the music fine, but the person's voice is soft. It's a live performance. I rarely touch the sound settings at all so i reckon it's not the sound settings of my computer.

In a nutshell, some specific sound is very very soft and weak. Whatever video/songs i play will lack a particular sound. It's weird to explain. I tried to change my earpiece/earphone too but to no avail. Does this happens when a sound card is spoilt?

Are u sure it is a soundcard and not onboard sound? Try to update sound driver(un-install, restart the system then install new downloaded sound driver).

Isn't onboard soundcard also counted as a soundcard? Will try to reinstall sound driver and see if it works. Thanks alot!

"Isn't onboard soundcard also counted as a soundcard?"

Yes and no. While both would have specific chipsets to enable sounds on a PC, onboard-sound can't be changed out (without possibly being disabled) like a sound card could be. It's not likely, though, that playing a single game would cause your sound chipset (card or onboard) to fail, especially if you've rebooted the machine. A registry or other setting, however, could have been changed if you installed the game and chose the wrong chipset in the game setup---which may cause you the problems you describe.

I realised it first when i was playing the game. Maybe it could have been like that before i play the game and i didn't realise.

I reinstalled my driver but the sound is still the same. It's like it can't produce certain sound. Can anyone identify what's the problem and how to resolve it? I also tried watching 2 different videos of the same live performance of adele but one of them was worse than the other, however when i use my laptop to watched those 2 videos, the sound quality is the same. i don't know what happen
