I have recently bought a game, Star-Trek Elite Force 2 (don't knock it til you tried it :P), and have found that it very often causes the system to freeze while playing. I have been told that the problem could be that my sound-card is not DirectX compatible. It is an "SiS 7018 Audio Driver". I have looked on the SiS website, but can't find any information as to whether it is compatible with directX. I was hoping that someone who is knowledgeable about sound-cards would be able to help me.

Thank you in advance.

It should be DX compatibal, Try updating your sound card drivers and maybe your graphics card drivers too.

I really believe this is a video card problem, rather than a sound card problem.

New games come out almost daily. Invariably, when a new one comes out, tons of people buy them and find that they won't work on their system/video board. So, the video board companies stay busy writing patches to their drivers. Check the website to see if there is a new driver out for your board. As for DirextX, I'd go ahead and download the latest and it will be backward compatibile in case the board is set to use, say, DirectX 8, as mine is. HTH

I already updated both (although the sound drivers didn't actually do anything when I clicked on the .exe file...), so..... I don't know!

It DOES always seem to crash when there is someone speaking in-game...

Evertime I access the DXDIAG , when it opens I recieve an error that says that DXDIAG could not access Direct Sound and would I like to bypass it this time .If I select no ,I end up with a blue screen error ? If i pick yes to bypass the utility opens ,I then click on the sound tab and run all sound test and it passes ,even the direct sound test (confusing). I believe its related to my PCI sound card a Diamond S90 ,they have not released any updated drivers for this card ,however it seems to work just fine. I was told that you may actually have less probs with DirectX 9.0a then 8.1 ? Apprently Microsoft claims they made special effort to make sure 9.0a was backwards compatable !
