Is my hard drive defected?

Specs: Vista 32 bit
Ok, so I bought a new hard drive to add to my current
computer, which is a gateway GT 5628.
The new hard drive I bought is the western digital
caviar black 1 tb and I bought that from newegg. This hard drive I planned to set as the slave or secondary hdd. I still boot the OS from my old hdd. After
receiving the hard drive I hooked it up to the
motherboard and booted up my computer. I checked
in bios to make sure the hard drive is detected and it
was. So I proceeded to my computer under disk
management and attempted to format the hard drive.
As it was 1 TB and 3am I just went to sleep when it
was 50% formatted. When i woke up and check the
computer, the hard drive wasn't detected under disk
management or device manager and when in bios, it
couldn't detect the hdd there either. I tried starting up
the computer with the hdd held in my hand to see if
the hdd is working but i felt it jerk a few times and
stopped running before my computer even got to the
bios setup screen. i tried switching sata cables and
power cables but same results. my power supply is a
coolmaster 750w and video card is 9800 gx2. power
supply to the hdd shouldn't be the problem right?

I would download and run Western Digital's diagnostics on the hard drive-it sounds more likely that it is defective than any problem with your psu.
