I've had nothing but trouble with this computer ever since first reformatting it.
I bought the computer in 2003. It has a Celeron 1.70Ghtz Processor with 248RAM (which I was in the process of adding more). It runs on Win XP.
This is my latest problem. While downloading music, games etc, my files suddenly disappeared. Oh, they were still there, but I couldn't see them, and they weren't hidden either. If I put in the exact name of the file I could open it. But when I opened up the folder to which all of my things were, there was nothing there. So I ran chkdsk /f and that worked. Then it would tell me I couldn't delete certain files. I couldn't copy them. I'd get the error "Cannot copy filename: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)". But still I ran chkdsk and it helped once more.
Now yesterday I finally download a 300MB game called Maple Story. This is a great accomplishment for me since I'm on dial up still. But it won't run the installation program. I can't copy and move it. I can't do nothing with it. I go to run chkdsk and it at first runs smoothly. Then it gets to stage 2/3 and it says "An unspecified error has occurred". Then it opens up to my desktop.
So my question is, is there anything I can do to save my hard drive and the things on it? Or is it basically on its last breath? I should probably mention that the whole computer is running EXTREMELY slow.
Please help me, I'm at my wits end here. And I'm so sick of having to cough up money to get this computer fixed.
