Hello everyone,

Allright here is the problem. I decided to "fix" my cousins laptop. I updated to SP2 of XP first. Next I installed AD Aware to get rid of spyware. Then I installed AVG Anitvirus software to get rid of a few trojans it had.

During the installation of AVG I had a prompt to install a file CDR4_XP2.sys file. So I didnt think anything of it and did it. So when I go to read a CD it wont. I mean it wont read any CD or DVD; nothing at all. So I removed CDR4_XP2.sys file from the computer which was a device driver for the dvd rom. That didnt work, so I searched a few things and couldnt find anything remote to the problem I had on the net.

Then I unistalled the drive and rebooted and it did the whole new hardware thing and installed it. I checked the drivers and they were new ones that were digitaly signed by microsoft. So I tried again; still nothing. I deleted the upper and lower filters in the registry also. Tried to access the drive in command prompt. Tried to XCOPY from it to harddrive from command prompt. All to no avail, just wasting more and more time on a simple fix.

I think something is wrong with the read lense, but I am not certain. I am at a lose on this, and the sad thing is I dont really know if it was broken before I did all this. Of course im an idiot and didnt set a restore point before I did everything.

Well if anyone has any suggestions Im open to any. Thanks in advance everyone.
