Subject: Is my CPU temperature too HOT?OS: Win XPCPU/Ram: AMD Athlon XP 1800+ |
Comment: Hi, I'm using motherboard monitor to see my CPU temperature. My CPU operate normally all days around 57-62 Degree Celcius. Is it normal? My CPU is AMD Athlon XP 1800+. People said AMD operate higher temperature than Intel CPU, so I hope my temperature is in the norm....hope.

Reply: (edit)"People said AMD operate higher temperature than Intel CPU" That's not exactly true. It depends on a lot of different factors, especially the model of the CPU, & cooling measures used. The earlier Athlon/Athlon XPs had a higher default voltage (1.75v) & tended to run hotter than comparable P4s, but the new P4 Prescott runs in the 60-70C range. That being said, your temp is higher than most people would like to see them for an Athlon XP. 30s-low 40s at idle would be the "normal" range. But before jumping to conclusions, you need to somehow verify the accuracy of your reading. The 1st thing to do would be check your BIOS to see if temps match up. If they do, you'll have to examine the case cooling setup & check that the heatsink was installed correctly. You should also check for dust buildup on the fan blades & the heatsink itself. If the temps don't match up & the BIOS readings are lower, chances are, the BIOS is correct. You may wanna try another monitoring program such as Speedfan to help determine which is correct, or go to the motherboard manufacturer's website to see if they offer their own monitoring software. http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php Asus A7N8X-X 1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz 512MB PC3200 Asus Ti4800SE 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro

Reply: (edit)ok thx. Yeah, my motherboard monitor show the same temperature as my BIOS. So, for normal operation, it should run at high 30 - low 40? wow, thats really low temperature...

Reply: (edit)That's rather hot. My overclocked Willamette P4 with a retail fan idles at 29C and only gets up to 53C under torture test. Most of the time it's around 30C. Bryan

Reply: (edit)Bryan, You can't compare temps between a P4 & an Athlon XP...they're 2 different animals. victorti83plus, My overclocked 1800+ is currently reading 30C for the socket temp & 43C for the die temp. Did you put this rig together or did you buy it preassembled? What HSF was used? Did you use a pad or paste? How many case cooling fans? Reply: (edit)thx for you guys reply: Hey Jam, I don't understnad your computer technology terms :p But anyway, I bought this computer like...pre-assembled, a technician help me to assemble it. (It was 2 years ago) what do you mean by soc temp and die temp? it looks like mine is die temp. Probably because my computer located near windows, which have sunlight going in and may cause the heat...dang.

Reply: (edit)Keep in mind that if your case temperature is very high, it's going to make it tough for the HSF to keep the CPU temperature really low.

Reply: (edit)Check for dust build up in the fins of your heatsink and around your cooling fan(s). If you seperate the heatsink from the processor, make sure you use,(my mind just went blank), the proper cooling paste/gell before you reassemble the heatsink and processor. I'm not familiar with AMDs but I hope this helps...
