Ok, I was playing bf2 and suddenly the computer just suddenly died. I saw a bsod for a millisecond but the system just shut itself down in a hurry. When I try to start it up, a long beep occurs and then there is a pause and more long beeps. I know that the long beeps mean memory error or cpu failure so I replaced the memory. That wasnt the problem so now im thinking its the cpu. am i right?

Generally one long beep indicates a memory problem. Did you get the correct type of replacement ram and did you install it correctly?

Don't overlook the possibility that the replacement ram is also faulty. It could also be the CPU, motherboard or power supply that is causing the fault.

Check www.bioscentral.com to confirm your decode of the beeps.

I've tried everything, making sure the ram was in, cleaning it, trying other ram. Now I need to narrow it down from psu, mobo or cpu. When the power is on, there is an led on my mobo that lights up so that leads me to believe the cpu is dead. please correct me!

just becuase the led lights up doesnt rule out a bad psu. try swapping the psu with a known good psu.

You are probably right. Just be aware that you might be guessing wrong.

The LED on the motherboard only proves that some 5V is being supplied. Fans spinning confirm the same for the 12V.

Im pretty sure its not the mobo or psu because not only the led, but when I power it on, the fans spin and I can hear the hard drive spinning.

The fans and hard drives can still spin even thought the motherboard and or CPU is defective.

Hi I have the exact same problem. My rig was working fine for 2 days since I built it then a brief bsod and now I just get repeated long beeps when I try to start it.
Ive narrowed it down to the CPU or m/board by replacing the ram, graphics card and psu with known working items.

It is a socket 939 cpu and I dont have spare ones lying around so ive just requested a replacement in the hope that it isnt the m/board that is the problem.

If you manage to solve this issue please tell me and I will do the same. Thanks.

In these forums the protocol is first check to see if any suggestions help with your problem. If they do, great! If not, start a new thread. This way the replies will be specific to your problem. Also it will be seen by more people. The original poster has even abandoned this thread and started another.

Without specialised test equipment, the only way to determine whether the problem i with the motherboard or the CPU, is to try replacing one of them. Obviously the CPU is the easiest.

Daedelus, your problem is similar to the OP's my recommendations about ram also apply to you.

Lou, if your system was working, then it does sound like a CPU failure. If t is newly assembled, there is a likelyhood that the motherboard is shorting to the frame. This is commonly caused by having too many standoffs installed or in more unbelievable circumstances, screwing the board directly to the frame (no standoffs)

As I said before, I tested the ram and it is fine.

I checked the returns status of the CPU and it said they have tested it and found a fault. They will send me a replacement soon.

I would suggest to CB33 that you try and get hold of a CPU for testing purposes and to positively identify your CPU as the culprit.

I will know for sure once I get my replacement but it does sound like ive caught the troublemaker.

Finally I got a replacement CPU. Does the same thing, continuous long beeps.
It seems unlikely the the new CPU is bad too so my new plan is to order a new motherboard. Should get here monday. If that doesnt work I dont really know as ive tested everything else. Ill just have to double check everything. Ill let you know what happens.

hmmmm, I got my new board and started with an old working pci graphics card, old working memory and the new cpu. Booted fine so I put my new graphics card in. Still booted fine. Put my new ram in, and I got long repeated beeps. Put the old ram back in and it booted fine again.
It was a memory problem after all. I thought I had tested the memory but obviously not well enough.
Not sure if that is any help to anyone but repeated long beeps probably means memory error.
