I have a Maxtor 6gig HD that heats up so much that it can't be used at all. I can't even get Windows to see it. It takes about 15 sec for the biggest chip on the back side of the HD to heat up to the point that its to hot to touch. I have RMA'd the drive with Maxtor but i want to transfer my data. The only way i assume i can do this now is by switching the chip board. I really don't want to mess it up and have to pay Maxtor for a big mistake! Can it be done? Should i even try?

Thanx in advance

You can't even remove the drive controller without destroying the drive and even if you could you would have to have one from the exact same drive to replace it with. Besides, the heat problem is most likely from inside the drive itself; maybe the bearings have failed or something. In any case you should count yourself lucky that they are going to take care of it for you, but you data may be gone for good. You could have the data retrieved by a drive rescue service but it's very expensive to have that done.
