|If you have programs that you use while on the internet, for instance, having the icon in the tray allows access without minimizing a window. Your word processing program, for instance, is very convenient to have in the tray. I am constantly copying text and placing it into Word. |
A rule of thumb to follow is this. If you have a program you use very little then don't have an icon in either place. You can always access it from the start menu or from Computer.
I have most of the shortcuts (icons) in the tray. I save temporary stuff on the desktop. When I am finished with it, I either move it or delete it.
