Specs: Windows XP, i5
Hey guys have an electrician coming into my house tomorrow to do the wiring he is charging $49.95 for cat6. He said the cable is UL rated and up to 1Gbps transfer rates. Is the cat6 worth? Would I need cat6 with hight speeds?

I don't like to spend money but I'd go for Cat6 or Cat6a. Cat5e will handle gigabit up to 100m, but just barely.

You're probably gonna live there for quite some time and 50 bucks now is a helluva lot cheaper than repulling cable later.

Make sure all your patch cables are the same specification. No Cat3 or Cat5 if the electrician installs the Cat6.

Today I wouldn't put cat6 in and say it was worth it. Maybe in a few years.

That link is for cable, 1000 feet of it too. An installation that actually meets the true gig spec has quite a lot of design rules that must be met. If I were to install it I'd have it swept to prove speed exists at all end points.

But, I suspect that 1000 feet of any lower cable would cost that much too.
