I need to know if I can use a Seagate Model ST380020A 80G hardrive as the master and slave my 40G that came in my computer (Compaq presarion SR1303WM), is it compatible or will I just end up frying my computer?

It won't 'fry' your computer even if it's not properly seen by the bios. (But the bios should see it OK.) So if you've already got it go ahead and hook it up. Just make sure you cable and jumper both drives correctly. And, of course, be careful when you're inside the case. The hard drive won't cause any damage but you might.

Now that's what I call a sticky situation

Reddog, make sure you unplug the power cable. The power supply will provide a small charge to the motherboard even when the computer is off. And sometimes that is enough to do some damage when you're working with a screwdriver and pulling cables.
