iPod as Removable Disk

I have a 20 GB iPod. I would like to start using it as my removable disk in the future, rather than my 256 MB usb flash drive.
I simply would like to know how iPod interfaces on a PC if it is just plugged in to a USB/Firewire jack without the computer having any additional drivers on it. Will it permit access to it via a Removable disk in My Computer, or will windows not recognize it and it will not function.
How will this go on a public terminal computer if I wanted to use it there?

I have been working with an iPod and 98SE. It is different with XP, but I think that you just need to install the updater on your computer and connect the iPod and restore it. I think then XP will see it and allow you to see it and use it.

1) When you say restore, do you mean erasing the whole thing?
2) Would anyone happen to know if any drivers are needed for xp. This is especially important on a public terminal.
