I have an Iomega CD-RW USB drive that I am trying to use with A Dell Dimension 3100. When I plug in the USB, the drive is not assigned a drive letter in My Computer. It does show up in device manager. I tried a thumb drive in the same ports and that works fine.

"So I have that going for me....Which is nice"

OK, it gets strange now. I have a DVD drive on another PC that is shared by the PC I am trying to hook the USB drive to. When I have the USB drive hooked up and open the shared DVD drive, it opens the USB drive contents. If I have a DVD in the shared drive and none in the USB drive, I get an error. If I unplug the USB drive, the shared DVD drive opens fine.

It looks as if the PC is assigning the USB drive the same drive letter as the shared drive.

Right click My Computer and select 'manage'. Select 'Disk Management' in the next screen. Find your drive and try changing the drive letter.
