I am having problems with an Iomega cd/rw usb drive (40/8/48x). On two computers I get an "I/O error" on trying to access the drive to burn a CD. XP does not open the CD wizard when a blank disk is put in the drive – I get the error when trying to open the drive in Windows Explorer. Anytime the drive is connected to the computer ALL access to Windows Explorer is very slow - display freezes, blanks out, etc. The slowness and freezing occurs upon merely opening My Computer WITHOUT ACCESSING THE DRIVE directly. As soon as the drive s disconnected operation returns to normal. Also takes a long time to detect when reconnected. The problem occurs on two computers, but not on a third that has the same hardware and initial image.
The only commonality between the two computers that have the problem, and which is not the case on the computer that is OK, is that on both problem machines the users formerly had the E: drive mapped to a network location. What’s stranger yet is that one machine initially had e: mapped to a network location when I checked the unit, and the cd/rw seemed to install cleanly, although with no drive letter. Once I removed the mapping I had the identical problems as with the first machine. I can't believe that mapping would be a factor on an I/O error, though.
Both computer still had the problem when freshly rebooted and are identical in every way (HP/Compaq 540, corporate image) except for user interaction with the machines in the last 10 days. The drive worked OK on a previous computer with Windows XP installed. I checked one of the problem machines and found no spyware or other rogue processes.
