i/o error while connecting to ex hd

CPU/Ram: 2 gig celeron 1 gig pc 2

I am having a problem with my 80 gig wd external hard drive... when i first got it it worked fine and at one pnt in time i had to format it because it stopped working well it was alright for a while but ne way... now w/e i try to connect it my computer starts to run extremely slow and when it finally pops up into my computer it says something like 'device i/o error cannot connect' but i tried it on a friends computer and it works fine i have been searching for a cpl of weeks and still unable to find anything if anyone has ne ideas plz i would also appreciate the hlp

Dude..what I can infer from this is as follows but try all the methods what I give..if possible

A)Try to remove all USB devices from the system

B)Try the USB hard drive on different USB ports of the computer

C)Sometimes , RAM problems do occur with the USB devices.Try to download memtest --- > http://www.memtest86.com/ and check whether it is a RAM problem

D)Try to see if the motherboard is faulty.I had a motherboard fault and sometimes I had my external HARD DISK stating "Device not found or USB device not recongnized".Once I replaced the motherboard,It was sloved.

E)Try to use if possible , a USB powered hub and then try to connect the external Hard disk to this hub which is connected to your system


Anyone of the following ideas would *hope so* get you through
