Prior ,Internet surfing was exceedingly slow. I zapped the drive. I restored the factory image in the state in which the comptuter was shipped. Surfing the Internet improved quite a bit. But not as fast as an older computer I have with less memory(128MB) and less CPU speed.(600MHz). In fact not as fast as when the computer was new. Any suggestions to improve the speed before I install drivers and applications?

Yes, Go to IE, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Security section and place a tick next to "Empty temporary internet files folder when browser is closed", Click Apply and Ok. Close all IE windows to empty the folder.
Then get some more RAM to bring it up to or over 512mb because Windows XP uses about 240mb of RAM just to display the desktop so everything you do from there requires that the data is swapped in and out of your pagefile meaning it is using your Hard drive as RAM which is extremely slow compared to RAM speed due to it having moving parts. (Was the other machine with 128mb RAM running WinXP too? I am guessing that it is not.)
