internal HDD fail. How to boot now?

OS: win2000
CPU/Ram: P(II) 400 / RAM =192

Hi,
My internal (primary) HDD has crashed and i have an external HDD that connects through USB. How can i boot now ? i dont want to buy another internal HDD. Can i install win2000 on my external HDD and boot from it ?
please advise any method by which i can make that of some use now.

It is doubtful that a Pii laptop has the necessary bios option to enable boot from USB. Have you checked your user manual?

Laptops are cheaper than when this one was new.

You might be able to get a "new" HDD for this laptop on ebay.

I doubt you'll be able to get this computer to run a Windows OS without an internal HDD.

but cant i do like this : boot from a CD and the run win2000 through USB HDD (assuming DOS recognizes USB HDD when we boot from the CD)

I think the problem is getting DOS drivers for your laptop's USB port.
