This is a bit of a conundrum:

I built a new computer last week, using
a Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4 NF4 SLI mobo, Athlon 64 X2 4200+ AM2, 2 gb of Corsair TWIN2X2048-6400, a XFX 6800XT 512MB video card, ANTEC TruePowerII-550ATX and a Maxtor 200 Gb SATA hard drive

It seems to run fine once it starts up, but it does this weird thing where as I log in to windows, it will just shut off, I've check the logs and it doesn't throw any errors. It seems to make a strange buzzing around that same time. The sound sounds to me like the computer speaker is getting weird interference, or something like that, not the hard drive itself clicking like it would if it was dead.

Any ideas of what I could do would be helpful, Thanks.

Open it up and check the CPU fan when it's turned on.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

If it runs okay in a non-windows environment (try booting from hiren's bootcd or gnoppix cd or morphix cd), then this is a software problem. Your symptoms are the same as what people had when they ran one of the windows activation crack programs that came out in June '06 to supposedly bypass windows validation on windows update. I do not remembver how to remedy it.

I may have tracked down the problem to a conflict between my primary SATA drive and my IDE drives that I had leftover from an old setup. I hadn't uninstalled the old copy off a partition and it seemed to let me choose between windows installs ok, but it got to the point i had to run a repair on my windows install to just boot into windows. I've disconnected the IDE drive and it seems to boot ok. But I'm crossing my fingers.

P.S. I'm not a pirate of windows
