Comment:

I recently (end of May) upgraded my computer from an Athlon XP 2100+ on an ASUS A7V133 to the spec above (details below).
My problem is that about 2 out of 3 boots I will get one long beep then a reboot which may take another one to three attempts to successfully POST. (i.e. today 3 attempts to succeed, yesterday first time, day before 2 attempts, day before that first time, etc.)

I have run a round of memtest with no errors.

Once it has booted and into Windows I have no problems at all and never have.

It is annoying to say the least and I am worried about damaging something or corrupting an HDD.

Any comments or clues would be welcome though I did build this on a budget and don't have spare cash to throw at it as I am currently under-employed.
If any more info is needed just ask.

Thanks for reading.

In addition to the specs below let me add that it has 3 HDDs (2 x IDE, 1 x SATA), 1 x DVD ROM, 1 x DVD burner and 1 x FDD.

CPU-Z:
AMD 64 X2 4800+ Brisbane
Core: 2512 MHz Multi: 12.5x Bus:201 MHz
Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4 Award BIOS: F10
Gigabyte link: http://tiny.cc/QlKMx
PQI Corp PC2-6400 2 x 1 gig Freq: 359 MHz

GPU-Z:
MSI NX8600GT Model: T2D256E-OC
GPU: 580 MHz Memory: 800 MHz Shader: 1188 MHZ
MSI Website: http://tiny.cc/VjmXW
H Enthusiast: http://tiny.cc/mHZMW

PSU: EZ Cool ATX 500 watt
+12v: 34A +5v: 30A +3.3v: 28A

PS As a separate question why does CPU-Z say my bus is at 201 but memory is at 359?

The problem oculd be a setting in your bios, what i would do is load feafult seetings in Bios and see if this helps, you should be able to select this option once in there, take a look around. or you can consult you manual and see how to get there.

some motherboards tend you restart themselves (MSI did this) when it encounters a problem, then attempts to load default settings.

may not be the solution but its a start atleast.

do you have a spare PSU that you can throw in to test if that is causing the problem?

Thanks for the response!

This BIOS version was flashed by me upon receipt of the MB as it was the newest one out and I needed to do so to support the CPU I had bought. I have certainly perused the BIOS to set up my boot order and set date and time but other than that I haven't changed anything in it. (That was going to be another question later as to optimizing it)

Unfortunately I have no other suitable PSU to try (only some old ones ~250 watt from P3s).

I'll check out the BIOS but what feature do you feel may be the problem?

Thanks!
