I am having a strange problem.

I have been noticing that on regular occasions the text is fuzzy, but I have since realised that it's not just text, I think it's everything, but only on very small text (and certain tray icons) is it really noticeable.

I have also now narrowed it down to the amount and darkness of colour on the screen. The more colour (and the darker it is), the worse the effect is. So that on this site which is almost pure white (and very light yellow) everything is crystal clear, but if I start to get colour on the screen, everything begins to get fuzzy. Obviously it's worst if I go to a site that has a black background, or if I play a game (obviously there is colour all over the screen then) that has very small text.

I'm pretty certain it's not gfx drivers as I have been enduring this through multiple versions and it even happens in safe mode, when my gfx drivers obviously aren't loaded. It also seems to happen at all resolutions, colour depths and refresh rates.

I'm almost certain you will all just say that the monitor is dying, but it's just so annoying that *right now* it can be absolutely perfect, yet if I minimise this Computing.Net window to display my desktop (and wallpaper) everything suddenly becomes so terrible, and I can instantly fix it by restoring this window. Also, the monitor is only 2 or 3 years old and it cost about 350 quid!

From the symptoms you describe it can only be the monitor. However, it doesn't seem that serious. A competant engineer should be able to fix it in a few seconds by tweaking one of the internal controls.

Explain the problem and get an estimate of cost before you give them the go ahead. It can be quite expensive just to take the back off.

Yep. Monitor dying.

If you minimize this computing dot net screen, it will sharpen up, as the computing.net screen is white, requiring the most strength out of your monitors gun, and making it blurry.

The desktop is darker, so needs less strength, so sharper.

Buy a new monitor.

Francis, if you read Trev's post again you will see that it is computing.net screen that produces the sharp image. Its the darker screens that gets blury.

This inicates the EHT circuits are a bit low on current and need to be turned up a bit. There is is a control inside every CRT monitor and TV to do this. Right next the focus control which may also need tweaking a bit.

Well I hope you're right Stuart, as I guess it's the best news I could really get considering it's obvious there's something wrong with the monitor. Hopefully it is as simple as you suggest.

Hi

Stuart has summed it up very well.

I'd just like to add, sometimes dust will collect over years on the monitor circuits inside. This can upset the High voltage circuits. Removing the dust with an air duster/can can improve things once it is removed.

A tv/computer repair shop would be one of the better places to get this done.
