Comment:

Both monitor and video card (Radeon x1950) is about 1 year old. This morning I turn on computer and I get "no signal input" on my monitor. I rechecked all cables, all is connected. I reboot, the monitor works for the "post", then stays on with the Microsoft Windows XP screen with the moving blue lines, after that the screen goes dead for a few sceonds, then I get the "no signal input" on the screen. I can go into safe mode (I am there now typing this message) so it works in safe mode, but when I reboot, I get the same problem. I am uding theDVI output for the card and for my monitor, but since it works in safe mode I am assuming there is nothing wrong with either, any suggestions? thanks in advance.

You can just use the update driver option. Look for the latest drivers for that card at the ATI site.

It did NOT work. I uninstalled the old drivers from "add and remove software" and rebooted. Everything worked fine, the computer (video card and monitor) works in safe mode and with no drivers installed. Once I re installed the drivers, I had the same problem again, Post and Microsoft logo with blue bars (monitor works fine) but then I get a black screen with "no signal input" on it.

Could be a defective card. Did you install the drivers in Windows standard mode?

Yea, I have had both card and monitor for about 1 year, all worked fine until this morning. I don't get why it works in safe mode and with no drivers. I guess calling ATI (have to wait until tues.) is my best bet......very frustrating.

The BIOS has the ability to run the display at VGA or SVGA mode. All cards are designed to work that way.

Did you download anything during the last working session?

You could try rolling Windows back using a restore point. If the problem is drivers or software that should work.

Did not download anything.
I don't know if it makes a difference but this morning the computer was working. I was playing a game but left the game running while I went to go play tennis. 2 hours later I come back and my computer is OFF. My wife told me we had a power outage for about 20 minutes. I then tried to turn the computer on and it was at this point that I had the problem.
I tried the system restore, it takes me back to where my old drivers were installed and I get the black screen with "no signal input"

Thanks for the effort though.

If you have eliminated the driver, it could be a hardware problem with either the card or the monitor.

To expand on what Othehill said earlier. Monitors and cards have two modes. The first mode is alphanumeric (VGA) which both start up in. When Windows starts it switches the card to graphics (SVGA) mode. It appears that either the card or the monitor has a problem with graphics mode. You could try reseating the card and swapping monitors. I bet on the card.

Safe mode uses VGA mode.

Thanks for the reply aegis. I re seated the card, same outcome. Since everything works properly when there are no drivers installed, would not this fact indicate that the monitor and video card are fine but that there is a software conflict somewhere?

If you really want to be sure the only way is to reinstall XP. When you install the drivers in Standard mode does the computer immediately blue screen or what? What resolution and color depth are you trying? If possible try a low resolution and color depth with the drivers installed.

With no drivers installed it probably remains in VGA mode. I don't think that eliminates the card or monitor.

Anyway, the only thing that would cause your symptoms is the video card or monitor. It's not going to be a motherboard problem and you seem to have eliminated the driver as the problem.

Othehill made a good point, when in safe mode reduce the resolution and refresh rate. I always seem to forget about that.

You guys hae been very helpful. One last question. If I am right and there is somekind of software conflict present, would reformatting hard drive fix this?
