I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with a dual core 1.6 processor in it now. I want to know if I can put a dual core 2.2 or 2.5 in it without a lot of expense. Thank you for any help you may have.

How much ram is in the machine? A ram upgrade and disabling all but necessary programs at startup will give you better performance. I know this wasn't your question, but unless you work with multiple programs open at the same time, this option would be cheaper. You can visit the Dell site and get the specs for your machine, then you can price processors.

Thank You for the info Grasshopper. There is 2 gigs of ram in it now and I was thinking of upgrading to 4 gigs. Would that be better than going with a bigger processor? I do not keep a lot of windows open. Just want to watch movies without any lag in them.
