Intel Core Duo vs P4

My desk top PC has a Pentium 4 2.8GHz processor, I think I'm about to purchase a lap top with a Intel Core Duo T2080 (1.73GHz)processor, how do these chip stack up against each other?

You are talking apples to oranges. A laptop would be built for other uses than speed.
Most dual cores do not fair as well as one might expect. At best they tend to be about 1.5x the speed of a single core. There are only a few times that they tend to get close to a true dual processor smp machine.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

The Core Duo 1.73 is easily faster than the 2.8GHz P4, even in single-threaded apps.
