I am looking at a New laptop because I just started school, Not too worried about battery life. I have found two that I like but am torn between the 2.

One is an Intel Core Duo, 1gb ddr2, 100 gb SATA 7200rpm hdd, 17 inch screen, Nvidia Go 7600 256mb video, DVD burner and the usual wireless, card reader...

The other is an AMD Turion64 ML 37, 1gb ram, 100gb 7200rpm hdd, the rest is the same as the Intel.

My only questions are If you were in the market for a laptop, what one of these would you choose?

I want the intel because dual core and the higher speed ram and hdd

I want the AMD due to the 64bit.

I think the intel has the 945 chipset so it will be upgradable to Intel's new dual core 64bit chip.

Thanks for any help

What are you planning on doing with it?
IE games as well as school?
what programs will you be using in school?
What is your curriculum?
this kind of info will help get you advise

If you can't fix it, blow it up and deny that you saw anything.

I'm an AMD man, but I believe Intels are better for laptops.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

Yes, I would be playing games as well as school work. The games will not be too hard for the laptops that I mentioned. Halo, Farcry, and some older ones like diablo.

I am going for "Computer Network Management" I don't know what softwae I will be using.

I do know that I will be running Linux from a second Hdd. I do know that I will be using the normal office software.

If you expect to play games like Farcry (& play them well), you'll need a decent graphics "card". Both of these setups have the GO 7600?

IMHO, you will get more benefit out of the dual core vs. the 64-bit.

I was leaning toward the "Core Duo" because of games like "Farcry" because of the Hard drive is SATA with the intel and IDE with the AMD

Thre's no real performance difference between SATA and IDE.

there is no preformance over SATA and IDE most transfer rates are 66mb anyway.

If you want to play games go with the Turion ML-37 64. The core Duo holds more battery life but the Ml-37 Turion 64 holds better preformance.

Intel mobile processors are known for their battery life more so then preformance, just like Turion mobile processors are known for their preformance more so then their battery life.

If you are planning on having this pc 3-4 years then it would be wise to get a 64bit processor, because everything is starting to shift to 64bit in the next year or two. some of your top gaming companies are already developing 64bit games and Far Cry 64 was one of the first games to go on 64bit. 64bit is the future both AMD and Intel for the most part are making 64bit processor for their desktops and within the next 6 months to a year Intel will finally release a 64bit mobile laptop processor. 32bit processors are getting fased.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7900GT
SATA II 2x 200gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

I do plan on keeping this computer for a few years. I know that 64 bit is the way to go. The Core 2 Duo is supposed to run on the 945 chipset, the laptop that I am looking at has that chipset so it would be upgradable to a dual-core 64 bit when it comes out.

I made a mistake with the graphics about the Turion, It is not the Go 7600, it is the ATI xPress 200m with 128mb of ram. I know that the xPress 200 will run FarCry on all Low settings, but it gets laggy when lots of things are moving.
