im currently installing a wireless pci card and whenever i put the card into a slot and turn on my computer the monitor wont work i think it has something to do with the graphics card but im not sure..im using windows 98 and the manufacturer said the card is compatable.
PS. when i install the card while the computer is on and the monitor working the monitor continues to work until reboot

Wireless PCI cards require 98SE or newer. This is a software requirement and has absolutely nothing to do with the boot process.
Since the PC won't boot with the card installed, this indicates that the card is drawing more power than the power supply can supply. This could be because the power supply is inadequate and the extra card pushes the draw over the limit. Or, more likely te card has a short circuit and is drawing too much power.
If possible, try the card in another computer. If you get the same results, then try to return the card. I say try in response to your PS. Never insert or remove anything while the computer is running.
The correct way to install a PCI card is to shut down and remove the mains power from the unit. Then you can work inside the case. Modern computers have 5V power supplied at all times. This is sufficient to cause component damage rendering the device unusable.

Some older systems require that the PCI slot directly next to the AGP slot be left open when an AGP video card is used. Is that a possibility?

NEVER insert or remove any card when the computer is running. VERY FOOLISH!
You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users
