Comment:

I bought a gig of ram, the specs are as follows:
184-pin DDR configuration
Double Inline Memory Module (DIMM)
Double Data Rate RAM (DDR)
Synchronous Dynamic RAM (SDRAM)
1.0 Gigabyte (1GB) / 1024 Megabyte (1024MB)
64x4 DRAM Configuration (Density x Organization)
266 MHz (DDR266)
PC2100 -- Bandwidth of 2.1 GB per second
Tested speeds of 7.5 Nanosecond (ns) or faster
CAS Latency 2.5 or 2.0 (CL 2.5 or CL2)
2.5 Volt (operates at over-clock voltages, however, this voids the warranty)
SSTL-2 I/O Interface for High Bandwidth Support
Non-ECC, Non-Registered, Non-Buffered, Non-Parity (Greatest compatibility with motherboards)
JEDEC compatible, AVL approved

I put the ram in the slot and turn on the comp. The comp has power and it's doing something, but my nothing ever comes on the screen. Any suggestions?

How many modules ? 1 or 2 ?

Can your mother board support single modules of 1 gig or 512 per slot ? If the board only supports pc2100 the chances are it can only take 512 modules per dimm. What does the support manual say ?

Is it seated correctly, do you get the post screen ? Can you get into the bios ?

Windows me has huge problems with 1 gig of ram. Most times it will only take a max of 512 unless you do some fancy mods within it.

Did you touch the memory chips with your finmgures ? If so you may have blown some of or all the chips.

Place your old stick of ram in the dimm slot and see what happens. What type, speed and capacity of your old memory module ?

Once we have some of these details than we can take it further

Regards

I checked out the motherboard manual (ECS EliteGroup - K7S5A) and it doesn't seem to help me.

The board has 4 dimm sockets - 2 for ddr, 2 for sd. The manual says nothing about individual slots, but says the board supports up to 1 gig.

I have two pc133 sdram (don't know the exct mem) sticks in my comp now. And no, I'm not trying to run sd and ddr simultaneously.

I was grounded when I inserted the ram.

The comp powers up, and is active, but no post, no bios...it's like the screen is in sleep mode.

I just noticed, on the ram it says pc333...is that a problem? The board manual says up to 266mhz with ddr.

If you don't get a POST beep. You have somehow killed the system. `Probably'Zapped the motherboard or CPU.

I'm using the computer that I'm trying to install the ram on right now. I'm using sdram right now on the same comp and everything works fine. So, I suppose I somehow fried the ddr ram (even though I was grounded). Is that a correct assumption?

First of all, if it is one stick, your MOB probably doesn's support it! You said it has two ddr slots and supports up to 1 gig of ram, thus 1 gig divided by two slots equals a max of 512 mb per slot.

Second, make sure you change the jumper which tells your mob to use the ddr memory instead of the PC133 mem. If your jumpers are set to use pc133 and you take that out and put in the ddr without changing the jumpers, you won't get a boot because your MOB can't or doesn't know to access the ddr slots. Jumpers for that and for memory speed and voltage are very important! Your MOB manual should tell you were to locate them and how to change them.

That's it. Change your jumpers and make sure your sticks are max of 512 mb each! Good Luck!
