OS: Win XP Home OEM
CPU/Ram: 1Gb PC3200
Comment:

I'm trying to install Win XP Home , the system starts up and goes into BIOS correctly, but when I put the XP disc in the message "Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration" appears, then disappears. The screen goes blank and just stays that way.

It's an OEM XP home disc.

The system specs are:

CPU = AMD A64 3000
mobo = Gigabyte GA-K8NS-939
Graphics = verto GF FX5200 AGP 128MB
RAM = 1 Gb PC3200
HDD = DiamondMax Plus 9 160GB ATA/133

Any help, thanks.

Try with a Windows ME boot diskette.From a 'D' dos prompt where D is the cdrom letter:
D: (press enter)
cd i386 (press enter)
winnt (press enter)
Follow onscreen instructions.
The hard drive is big enough to be partitioned before use.You need a primary C drive set active to start the setup.

If there are no partitions present on the hard drive,the setup will create only one with the whole of the available space.With such a large hard drive this may not be the best setup.

The hard drive must be connected as Master or Cable Select on the single IDE port.Look settings on the hard drive for the jumper if detection by the bios program is a problem.

Always save settings before exiting bios.

Run a mem test.

Try a live linux cd to see if the machine can work. It may be any fault, you haven't determined if the XP cd is good however.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

OK, I'll try a live Linux CD.

The XP disc is new out of the box.

How do I test the memory? Can I do that in the BIOS?

Thanks for all the replies.

Test the memory with Memtest86.

http://www.memtest.org

The BIOS memory check is too basic to be of much use other than to check that the memory is there and there are no gross errors.

Memtest 86+ came up with no errors.

Damn Small Linux and Ubuntu Linux both ran from Live CDs, when Ubuntu tried to install a message came up on screen:
"buffer I/O error on device hdc"

This might not be exact because as I wrote it down it disappeared and said something about activation swap, then ran Ubuntu from disc.

Hdc sounds like the Hard Drive to me, as the Linux distros both ran, does that mean there is an HDD problem?

The HDD shows up in the BIOS.

Thanks,
Sam

Does sound like a HDD error. Go to the disk manufactures web site and download their diagnostic application. They all have them.

This will do a thorough check of the HDD.

There doesn't seem to be a diagnostic tool from Maxtor.

I did find this PowerMax thing:
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.j...

But I don't know if this will help.
It seems to be about fixing problems with the computer after the OS is installed.

Thanks

Alright, I ran the PowerMax diagnostic thing. All the tests came up with no faults, and then I did a Low Level format, just for the hell of it.
After that I put the Windows disc back in, this time it got past "Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration" and went into the installation menu.

I clicked on Install Windows, created a partition and then asked it to install on that partition.

It started formatting the drive, got to %100 and then rebooted. I had to start again, I did this quite a few times and it never got past formatting the partition.

Any ideas?
