Hello all,
I dropped my Dell Inspiron B120 Laptop the other day. The HDD broke. I went to Best Buy and bought a new one. I do not have my original XP cd that came with the laptop.
I installed the new HDD. Of course there is nothing on it so the laptop doesn't boot. I went to this microsoft website per a reccomendation:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...
to download Windows XP SP3 (the file is over 500 mb I was told it has the entire XP). I burned this ISO file to a CD and tried to boot it from the laptop but it says:
"No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility"
So I changed the boot devices in the BIOS to only look at the CD drive. NO luck.
So now Im wondering where i go with this.
I have the XP sticker serial number on the bottom of the laptop, its not like Im trying to steal a copy.
So I'm thinking a couple things right now. Either the CD drive broke too (I guess this is possible). Or that windows XP file is not bootable and I need to get another copy.
Im kind of in a crisis so I thank you ahead of time for any advice or help you can provide!
THanks,
Bruno

I think you need to go to the Dell web site (or talk to the Dell people) and find out how to set up a replacement hard drive.

Well, i have already purchased another hard drive in addition to the one I am using on this computer. I don't think its necessary to get a third hard drive.
Im more interested in how to set up one of these two I currently have.
Windows brings with it all necessary hardware drivers or has the means to get them from the internet.

You MUST have an XP cd of the same version that was on your pc. Home or Professional edition. See if you can borrow one from someone.

Exactly, and I think you will need some Dell help to do that. They should have a utility to prepare a new drive for installation. No one said anything about purchasing another drive.

The Windows XP SP3 that you downloaded is just that; a Service Pack. It is NOT the Operating System. What exactly "broke" on the HDD?
You should be able to obtain a Reinstallation CD from Dell, and if you enter the ST on their Support site, you'll be able to download all necessary drivers once you install the OS.
