Installing new HD on Toshiba ?!?!?

I'm trying to install a new HD into my Toshiba Satellite 2590CDT. I'm removing a 6.1GB IBM Travelstar and replacing with a 20GB Toshiba HD. When I plug in my new HD and boot up, I can hear it start spinning but the @$% computer says there's no fixed HD present. Why would this be so??? I've checked the fitting/connections multiple times, the new 20GB also works fine in my external USB case? Cheers !
