I was wandering:
When Installing an external modem to one of my serials ports, it detects it on COM1.
Then I added an internal PCI modem to the same machine, and it detected it as on COM2.
So, COM ports nominations have nothing to do with whether it's serial or PCI?

That is correct. A PCI modem still requires a COM port. Mine is COM3. Yours is COM2.

As a general rule COM ports will initially be assigned to the built-in serial ports on your motherboard, if enabled. On older systems there were 2 serial ports as standard, these were COM1 & COM2. Any PCI ports added after took on COM3 & above, though they were often pre-assigned by jumpers - hence COM conflicts. Modern PCs come with only 1 serial port, sometimes none as very little uses them these days so subsequent PCI cards take on COM2 & up as is the case with your system.
