Comment: I have an old Dell notebook (inpsiron 3000), with Win Me. the CD-rom is not working anymore. I want to backup some of my files. I want to install an external CD-RW, but how can I install one without CD-ROM?

Reply: (edit)pull the DEAD cd rom out of the case put the cd writer in its place on that cable, hook the little wire *sound* up as like the same as the cd rom, and make sure the jumper its set as MASTER on the back of the cd writer, and your all set. boot it up and windows should install the drivers.

Reply: (edit)usually it's yes. The drive is most likely to be recognized by your computer if not as cdrw, at least as a cdrom so you can install any necessary drivers. Alternatively, you can always go online and download the driver before you plug in the drive. Then you plug the driver and install the driver that you downloaded from the web.

Reply: (edit)David...this person has a laptop! heh...anyways...ya samsamha is correct...winME's database may pick up your drive...doubtfully though. even if it doesn't you should be able to go to the manufacturers website and DL the *.inf or drivers to make it work. See external drives usually setup a virtual SCSI controller to interact correctly with your system...the 4 IDE device law. bah.
