"does progress even after 3 hours." --- or does NOT progress even after 3 hours?

- What type of hard drive - IDE or SATA?

- New or used hard drive?

- You could have other PC issues, bad (or going bad) motherboard, hard drive controller, cable, power supply, HDD pin settings (if IDE), BIOS settings etc.

You can download WD's DataLifeguard, make a bootable floppy/CD disc, and test the WD hard drive. I've seen it 2-3x, it's rare, but sometimes even new hard drives right out of the box & static bag can have issues.

Just another stupid saying...
