well, yesterday my hard disk past away. it was my first hard disk. to the point, it was the only and master hard drive on the pc. i am about to install a new one instead of the dead one. my questions are:
1-if the new hard disk was slave in his pc, and i want it to be master in my pc, its anough to change the button from "slave" to "master" in the hardisk itself, or i've to do something else?
2-the drivers that i've installed in my pc (sound card etc...) i've to installed them again because i've change the hardisk?, i've understand the each har disk have some invisible space in which the drivers are saved. if it's true, how can i format this space? if it isnt true, where the information about the drivers is saved?

that's all mean while... thanx alot!!!!! i really apriciate your help!!!

You will have to Master it. Then Fdisk and Format. Then install all of your programs from disk to the replacement drive. Make sure you have a start up disk so you can load the CD ROM drivers. If you are going to be using the computer for many years make sure the drive you select now will be the drive you will be happy with two years from now. Reformatting and reinstalling all of your favorite programs and tweeking can take up to three days or more depending personel preferences. Good Luck.

Well I have never heard of a Hard Drive having an invisible place for Drivers... But yes... I am afraid that you will have to install all drivers on your new HD. And by all drivers.... you know what I mean. Even Internet drivers.

You call it a "new" HDD, then you said, "the new hard disk was slave in his pc"...so it appears that it's not a "new" HDD at all. You're gonna have to format the drive, then do a fresh install of Win98. You'll need drivers for video, sound, modem, motherboard chipset, etc. Win98 will load generic motherboard & video drivers, but I doubt it'll load drivers for sound or modem. If you don't have them, you'll have to get the make/model for each & see if you can download the drivers from online

If the `new' hard drive has a working Operating System on it and you want to try and use it instead of formatting and installing windows, you can try the following. To delete all the drivers on the hard drive you can edit the Registry. Boot up in safe mode and start regedit. Delete the following key:

Hkey_Local_Machine/Enum

Hi Brian
Ok first listen to what Jam has to say. Ham means well but I, and I'm not trying to be funny Brian, don't think your quite ready to investigate the registry just yet.
What Jam means is that when you have installed 98 it will only use the drivers that are on that disc ok, which means probably for example the display will be the very basic display.
When every thing has installed then it's time to install the, what I would call the system disc, that came with the machine or if you do not have one then you will have to download a prog like AIDA which will check your system and tell you what drivers are needed, I think I'm right in saying that.
After that all should be ok, if I'm adrift on anything then let me know people.
