Comment: I'm trying to remove an older CD Drive and install a new Lite-On DVD/CD Drive (not RW)...I don't know how to get access to the back of the drive to remove the IDE and other cables..took both sides off, but, can't get the cables out...should I take the "inner top" off? Is there another trick to accessing the drive? Don't want to jerk on the cables and break something (just my style)...don't think I should need to take it to a specialist to replace a drive like this...can anyone help? Thanks a lot... Robert

Reply: (edit)With both sides off what is stopping you from removing the drive? Perhaps looking through the holes in the side of the case where the CD drive is located you will be able to see the 2-6 connecting screws. Through those same holes you should be able to insert a (magnetic) screwdriver to disconnect the device. Be careful removing and replacing the IDE and molex connectors as they are easy to damage. Get the CD Drive in your hand before trying to disconnect the wires. You may need to remove a device below the CD Drive from it's bay in order to remove the CD drive or perhaps the power supply if it is in the way. Depending on how it was assembled it is also possible that once you remove the screws you may be able to slide it out through the front of the case. Of course, always take static electricity precautions. I noticed that you state it is a custom built machine. Is the assembler still around to consult? HTH Bryan

Reply: (edit)Hi, As Bryan says, should be fairly easy to remove CD-ROM. With the sides of the case off like you have, make sure you are grounded by touching the metal part of the case while touching anything inside. Gently pull the cables off of the CD-ROM. You can work the ribbon cable off by carefully pulling one end a little bit at a time as you see the connector disengaging (not too much on each end - the CD-ROM pins could break). You want to do this by grabbing the plastic connector (don't pull wires). That Molex connector from the power supply is also sometimes on there pretty good too. Carefully pull that one off and the audio cable too, if there is one. Remove the screws from the sides of the CD-ROM and slide it out.
