I just installed a pci modem(new)on my machine and now I don't have any sound. I was on the net with the new modem(previously used an external modem) and minutes into it the system froze. I have tried using my headphones, speakers, microphone and there is no speaker icon in the system tray now!

Do you also have a PCI sound card? If so, the new internal modem could have created an IRQ conflict of some kind with your sound card. You may find the following link helpful:
Windows XP Page: IRQ Conflicts.

Generally speaking, external modems are much better than internal PCI modems. Why the switch?

Check device manager for any hardware conflicts.

Yes I have a pci soundcard because soundonboard has been a problem in the past. That site was partially useful but I am still not up with XP. Just upgraded from win98se a couple of weeks ago.
I didn't keep the external modem as it only had drivers up to win2000. I knew that and did a search to make sure.
No obvious conflicts in Device Manager.
Maybe I should just reinstall the soundcards driver from the cd?

Did you even try the external modem? Win2000 drivers usually work with WinXP, but XP may have built-in drivers.

External modems are "hardware" modems, the majority of PCI modems are Soft/Win modems...they're usually slower than external modems, plus they use CPU clock cycles.

Although I've finally switched over to DSL, I've had no problems getting external modems to run on either of my XP systems in the past.

Tried all that! Not going to DSL too expensive!

I didn't suggest you switch to DSL, but I do suggest you use the external modem. You just have to figure out how to set it up

The external modem is gone. I tired everything even the standard windows drivers! I was using another external modem but that is a 28k one. Anyway looks like I may have solved the problem. I think the conflict may have been with the network card that I didn't get around to installing the drivers for. I won't be using it for a while if ever so I pulled it out. Then when I booted a few times the sound icon has returned to the system tray and can heard through the headphones now. I am on the net now too but will give it half an hour before I declare victory.
Thanks though....I didn't take offense about the suggestion that DSL is good and all that. I wish I could afford it as it would be much better! Thanks!

Oops I spoke too soon. I was on the net and it froze again. When booting back up I can get on the net but the speaker icon is not in the system tray. I dunno what to do now!
