I replaced a CD drive with a CD-R/W drive, and installed the Nero SW that came with it. All was fine for a day or two. THEN - the volume control disappeared - from the desk top, and from Accessories/Entertainment. Also have no sound from any source. If I launch Nero or Media Player and try to play a CD, I get a "no sound card installed" message. I uninstalled and reinstalled the sound card, updated drivers, etc. If I go to Multimedia/Audio, the entire screen (Recording & Playack) is greyed out. When I launched Sndvol32.exe, nothing happened. I reinstalled it, now I get a message "no active mixer devices installed". I don't know where to go next.

Go into device manager and uninstall all sound devices. Reboot and see if it picks up the card.

I did that several times. Windows installs the HW, but still no sound.
