I have a problem with the installation of an update file. Windows update recommends to install the “Dell Inc. – Other Hardware – Dell SE198WFP (Analog)” for my system. Actually it lists the above update as optional and not critical update. I thought because my computer comes with that monitor (Dell SE198WFP) I should install this update. When I installed it though it failed and the error details show: “Code 800FO20B” The information that comes with this error code says “If you receive Windows Update error 800f020b while trying to install updates, an update that you're trying to install applies to a device that is not connected to the computer. Make sure that all of your devices are connected and turned on, and then try installing updates again.”

I can’t understand how it could say that the update applies to a device that is not connected to the computer. The monitor is connected to the computer; otherwise I couldn’t work with the computer. I don’t know if this error message indicates something else. If anybody could help that would be much appreciated.

Windows Update Recommended Updates is a joke. You don't go to Microsoft for updates for your machine components just as you don't go to the component manufacturer for updates for Microsoft Windows. Just disable or hide the Optional Updates (Recommended updates) per the instruction given in the link below.

In your case, you should only go to Dell for software updates that apply to your specific model. In any case, always read the description to determine if you really need it.

I agree with XPUser.
Don't get drivers for devices from Microsoft Update. I've had some bad experiences with them.
e.g. some drivers for a SM56 Motorola chipset dial-up modem - the modem supports voice, the Microsoft Update drivers did not - I needed the voice support - I had to find the *.inf file for the drivers and delete it before I could install the proper drivers.

However, you can use the appearnce of drivers there as probable indication there are newer drivers available on the manufacturer's web site.

Thank you for your help. I contacted Dell and they told me there is no need to download that update.
