now i need install a windows me or xp wherever i just need one.
i copy a instalacion of a windows me already running on other pc but when i try boot they say that i have no system operation, i think its because i need change something on the hardrive to turn bootable.
i have see a command "format c: /s" to make an external hard disk bootable, but the command "/s" doesn't seem to exisist any more or simple dont work.
i try this using a usb device that can read from the hd of the laptop. this device is pluged in my pc that is running windowxp

i have looking on the internet for a solution but now i reach at a dead end
any one have a sugestion? how can i install a windows by only using a hardrive?

So the only working boot device is the hard drive?

One method with ME is to remove the drive and attach it to another 98 or ME computer. Make it bootable with the SYS X: command, where X: is it's drive letter in the second computer. Then copy the contents of the WIN9x folder on the ME cd to a folder on the hard drive.

Put the hard drive back in the original laptop and boot it up. At the C:\> prompt change to the folder containing the setup files and run setup.

That's just a general overview. The exact steps are a little more complicated. You probably need an adapter to attach the laptop drive to a desktop as I doubt another laptop can accomodate 2 hard drives. You'll need to know a few dos commands. And, I've never done it that way using an XP computer or even installing XP that way so I can't be of help there.

As long as the drive is properly partitioned and formatted you should be able to copy the necessary files to it. I've never done it with a USB drive but that shouldn't matter.

Also, I think you need himem.sys to load from config.sys in order to install 98 or ME. So you'll need to create a file named config.sys with notepad and have one line in it that reads:

and put both config.sys and himem.sys on the root directory of the booting drive.

It gets kind of complicated when you try to install windows in non-traditional ways. It might just be easier to replace the cdrom.
