Your old mobo may not support a newer ata66/100 hdd. You will probably need to use the software that comes with the hdd. It is possible it won't work, depending on your mobo.

mobo is short for motherboard.

adding a new hard drive isn't that hard. If you already have 4 ide devices, you'll need to buy a controller card (if the hard drive is bigger than 137gig, than it sometimes come with one free).

Once you have the hard drive, change the jumpers so it's set as master or slave (as needed), and plug it in. Just make sure the hard drive is master if it's alone on the ide channel, or if you are adding it to a cdrom or dvd drive (set that as slave).

bios should recognize it already (if not, the hard drive might come with a disk that'll configure it for you). To install the OS, just follow the instructions for it.

If you are installing a new HD, you will probably need to fdisk it then format before you can install an OS. You will also need a start up (boot) disk...
