I'm looking at a Dell Inspiron for a friend, he thinks the power button is bad, But I have it plugged in and I have no lights, shouldn't there be a light showing that it's plugged in and getting power (the only light is on the power supply, a green one)?? If the battery is shot would that keep it from powering up, even when it's plugged in?? Thanks Rick A.

Does the battery and power supply get very warm (hot)? If the battery is bad and draws enough power to overload the power supply it is possible that the computer would not start. This would be safety hazzard. Had a case in which the power supply case started to melt.

Usually the battery charge lamp lights when the power supply is connected. May be a bad connection. The power connector in the laptop is frequently damaged.
