Comment:

I have a AMD-K7 2100, 512 MB RAM (DDR 333) and nVidia Gforce 4400

I would like to increase the power of my pc. Possibles ways are:

1) substitute CPU for one belonging to the same family. For instance AMD K7 2800. Are they out of catalog, or are still marketeable?. The current Sempron 754, are compatible?

2) Substitute the mother board for a, say, Socket 939 and get a new AMD 64 Athlon 3200

In this case, danger is if the other components are "usable" in the new mobo, and if the RAM will be enough or has to be increasaed to 1GB or even substited

3) Overclock the current CPU (it has a new fan, formatting pictures caused the CPU to spontaneous halts caused by heat. I am concerned about that, but I see there are forums devoted to that, so... it has to work!

can you be more specific about the model - is it AMD Athlon 2100xp ?
If so it has 266mhz FSB. I think probably highest you could get with 266 fsb is 2400xp, which is not worth upgrade.
I think athlon 2800xp would be 333 fsb i believe.
Check your mobo, it might do 266 and 333 mhz fsb, but more likely not if mobo is same age as the cpu.
You would probably need to upgrade ram from pc2100/266mhz to pc2700/333 mhz. That assumes you have DDR ram.
athlon 2100xp is socket a / socket 462. A '754' cpu would not fit mobo.
Athlon xp processors are now quite rare new.

just noticed you already have 333mhz ram.
That makes me wonder if '2100' is the actual speed of your current processor in mhz as opposed to the model number.
